Saturday of the Sixth Week of Easter
Acts 18:23–28
Apollos is impressive.
He is intelligent. He speaks well. He knows the Scriptures. He is passionate. He is on fire.
And yet, he still needs help.
That is what makes this reading so real.
Because many people are like that.
They are sincere. They are searching. They are enthusiastic. They know something about God. They can even speak about faith in a convincing way.
But they have not yet gone deep enough.
Apollos already knows something about Jesus. He is already teaching “the way of the Lord.” But his understanding is still incomplete.
So Priscilla and Aquila do something beautiful.
They do not humiliate him. They do not attack him. They do not show off what they know.
They take him aside and explain the way of God more fully.
That is a wonderful image of the Church.
Not a place where people crush each other. Not a place where knowledge becomes pride. But a place where one believer helps another go deeper.
That matters a lot today.
Many people around us have fragments of faith.
A few ideas. A few memories. A few prayers from childhood. A few questions that never went away.
Some are curious about Jesus. Some admire him. Some feel drawn to him. But they do not yet know the fullness of who he is.
And sometimes all they need is someone patient, someone wise, someone kind enough to walk with them further.
That is what Priscilla and Aquila do.
And that is what Apollos accepts.
That is also beautiful.
Because it is not easy to let someone correct you. It is not easy to admit that your understanding is still incomplete.
But Apollos is humble enough to receive more.
And because he is teachable, he becomes even more fruitful.
A person who is willing to keep learning becomes a blessing to many.
But learning what?
Not only ideas. Not only doctrines. Not only the right words.
The first Christians called faith the Way.
And that is beautiful.
A way leads somewhere. A way must be chosen. A way must be walked.
And along the way, we all need guides.
That is what Apollos received.
And that is why he could later help others walk the same road.
Apollos reminds us that being gifted is not enough. Being sincere is not enough. Even zeal is not enough.
We also need humility. We need to be teachable. We need to let God lead us deeper.
Because when that happens, faith stops being a little spark kept to ourselves.
It becomes a fire that helps others believe.
