Saturday of the First Week of Advent, Dec 6, 2025

19 Truly, O people in Zion, inhabitants of Jerusalem, you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when he hears it, he will answer you. 20 Though the Lord may give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself any more, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. 21 And when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

23 He will give rain for the seed with which you sow the ground, and grain, the produce of the ground, which will be rich and plenteous. On that day your cattle will graze in broad pastures; 24 and the oxen and donkeys that till the ground will eat silage, which has been winnowed with shovel and fork. 25 On every lofty mountain and every high hill there will be brooks running with water—on a day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. 26 Moreover the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, like the light of seven days, on the day when the Lord binds up the injuries of his people, and heals the wounds inflicted by his blow.

Isaiah 30:19–21, 23–26

Isaiah 30:19–26 offers a message of hope and restoration that begins with a tender promise:

“O people of Zion, who dwell in Jerusalem, no more will you weep. He will be gracious to you when you cry out; as soon as he hears, he will answer you” (Is 30:19).

The Lord will care for His people — guiding them, nourishing them, and binding their wounds. The passage ends with another image of grace: the Lord healing the injuries of His people (Is 30:26).

Three themes stand out in this reading — education, health, and the environment.

7.1. The Path to Follow – Education

Isaiah says, “When you turn to the right or to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way; walk in it” (Is 30:21). That is the voice of a true teacher — patient, guiding, and near.

Today, many voices claim to show us “the way” to happiness. Minimalists tell us to live meaningfully with less; mindfulness teachers offer peace through awareness; researchers study “blue zones” to uncover secrets of long life. Each declares, “This is the road!” Amid all these modern guides, there is also the quieter voice of the Church, often drowned out by the noise of the age. Yet her message remains simple and enduring: Follow Christ. Let Jesus be your Teacher and your Guide.

The same Lord who whispers “This is the way” is also the one who heals and restores — which brings us to the next theme.

7.2. Healing Touch – Health

There is a saying: a healthy person is a rich person. Our awareness of health has increased, and more people care about what they eat, drink, breathe, and feel. Yet true health, in the Christian vision, has three dimensions — harmony with God, with others, and with creation.

Many today reject institutional religion but hunger for spirituality. Yet the Western model of isolated individualism leaves deep wounds — anxiety, loneliness, and exhaustion. Surrounded by walls of glass and cement, we forget that nature itself has healing power, that God’s creation is medicine for the soul.

7.3. Rain for the Seed – Environment

Ancient Israel was an agricultural society. Most people worked in the fields that sustained them. Their daily rhythm was bound to the earth’s seasons and the Lord’s providence. We have lost that connection. Many city dwellers have never even seen a field. Food arrives from supermarkets, its source unknown. But every new city, highway, and factory means less soil for cultivation.

A Pacific Island proverb warns, “When we eat the last fish and cut the last tree, we will realize that money cannot be eaten.” By then, it may be too late.

7.4. Grace Restores What We Cannot

Isaiah’s vision reminds us that renewal is not merely human work. The Bible never expects humanity alone to create a just and livable world. We need the Lord to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves — to transform our minds and hearts so we may hear His voice and walk His path.

When we return to Him, the Teacher will no longer hide. His voice will guide us, His touch will heal us, and His rain will fall again upon our dry and weary land.
