Monday, Memorial of Saint Justin, Martyr
2 Peter 1:2–7
Have you heard these words?
“Faith without works is dead.”
And how about these?
“Faith works through love.”
These words come from two disciples of Jesus:
James and Paul.
Today Peter says something very close.
He takes us on a journey—
from faith
to love.
He begins with faith.
Then he says:
add excellence,
add knowledge,
add self-control,
add endurance,
add godliness,
add brotherly affection,
and finally—
love.
You are drawn to Christ.
You believe in Him.
You want to follow Him.
That is beautiful.
But it is only the beginning.
Faith is the first step,
not the whole road.
Because the goal is not simply
to say,
“I believe.”
The goal is to become like Him.
Christlike.
To love the way He loved.
Not only when it is easy.
Not only when people are kind.
Not only when we feel strong.
To love till the end.
And this is possible
because Christ first walked the road for us.
He came from heaven
to show us the way to heaven.
Though He was in the form of God,
He became like us.
A human being.
He shared our hunger,
our tears,
our tiredness,
our wounds.
He became a child of Mary
so that we could become children of God.
He entered our life
so that we could enter His.
This is what faith is meant to become.
But Peter knows
that love does not appear in us by magic.
It grows.
Like a seed.
Like a small flame.
Like a child learning to walk.
Step by step,
the heart is trained.
And this training
is not about becoming impressive.
It is about becoming more like Jesus.
Jesus did not love from a distance.
He touched the sick.
He welcomed sinners.
He noticed the forgotten.
He washed feet.
He forgave enemies.
He gave His life.
That is love.
And Peter says:
walk toward that.
Do not let your faith remain only an idea.
Do not let it remain only a prayer you repeat.
Do not let it remain only a name you carry.
Let faith become goodness.
Let faith become courage.
Let faith become patience.
Let faith become mercy.
Let faith become love.
Because in the end,
the most important question will not be:
“How much did you know?”
or even,
“How loudly did you say, ‘I believe’?”
The question will be simpler.
And deeper.
“What did your faith become?”
And the most beautiful answer is this:
Lord,
little by little,
my faith became love.
