Called to Renew the World — Listen to Him

Second Sunday of Lent

Genesis 12:1-4; 2 Timothy 1:8-10; Matthew 17:1-9

God created the world. But history is shaped by people.

And from the beginning, we have shaped it poorly.

Cain kills his brother. Lamech boasts of revenge “seventy-sevenfold.” Violence multiplies. Human power grows — but justice fades.

So God begins again.

Not with an empire. Not with a weapon.

With a man.

Abram.

Not chosen because he was great. Chosen by grace.

Chosen for a purpose:

“To keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice.”

That was what the world lacked.

Without righteousness and justice, no civilization survives.

But Abraham was only the beginning.

Centuries later, on a mountain, Jesus is transfigured.

His face shines. His clothes become radiant.

For a moment, the renewed world is visible in Him.

Moses and Elijah stand beside Him — the Law and the Prophets.

And then the voice from the cloud:

“This is my beloved Son. Listen to Him.”

That is the turning point.

Not admire Him. Not debate Him.

Listen.

And what has He said?

“You have heard… but I say to you.”

He goes deeper than the Law.

You shall not kill — uproot anger.

Love your neighbor — and love your enemy.

Forgive — not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

Do you hear the echo?

Lamech multiplied revenge seventy-seven times. Jesus multiplies forgiveness seventy-seven times.

Two histories. Two futures.

One feeds violence. The other breaks the cycle.

The renewed world is not built by force.

It begins with obedience to Christ.

Following Him down the mountain. Following Him toward Jerusalem. Following Him to the cross.

Because the light of the Transfiguration does not bypass the cross.

It passes through it.

And on Easter morning, we see what renewal truly means:

Death does not have the final word. Hatred does not win. Love does.

Saint Paul reminds Timothy:

We are “called with a holy calling” — not because we deserve it, but because of God’s grace.

Chosen — like Abraham.

Chosen not to escape history, but to shape it differently.

The voice from the cloud still speaks:

Listen to Him.

The world will not be renewed by louder arguments or stronger tribes.

It will be renewed when people actually obey the One who forgives.

God created the world.

In Christ, He shows us what it is meant to become.

And we are called to walk that way — all the way to Easter.
